Advice for travel vaccines and medications

If you have a trip planned to visit another country, make sure you have a travel consult with our pharmacist at least six weeks before you leave. It’s worth it to minimize your chances of getting sick while you’re away so you can focus on making memories.

Here’s what to expect during a travel consult:

  • A review to make sure your routine immunizations are up to date.

  • Recommendations for travel vaccines based on the regions you’ll be visiting.

  • Advice for travel precautions and on-hand medications to take with you in case you experience traveller’s diarrhea or malaria while abroad.

Travel services are available by appointment or for walk-ins.

  • A travel vaccination clinic is a specialized healthcare facility that provides vaccinations and medical advice specifically tailored for travelers. These clinics are equipped to offer a wide range of travel vaccines, ensuring that individuals are adequately protected against diseases prevalent in their destination countries.

  • Visiting a travel vaccination clinic before your trip is crucial for your health and safety. These clinics assess your specific travel itinerary, review your medical history, and provide personalized recommendations on vaccinations needed to protect you from diseases prevalent in your destination. Travel clinics also offer valuable advice on other health considerations, such as food and water safety, insect-borne illnesses, and general travel health precautions.

  • The vaccinations recommended for travelers depend on several factors, such as the destination, duration of stay, planned activities, and individual health status. Common travel vaccinations include those for diseases such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, yellow fever, rabies, meningococcal meningitis, and tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap). It is best to consult with a travel vaccination clinic or healthcare professional to determine the specific vaccines required for your trip.

  • It is recommended to visit a travel vaccination clinic at least 4-6 weeks before your departure date. Some vaccines require multiple doses, and your body needs time to develop immunity. By allowing sufficient time, you can ensure that you are adequately protected before you start your journey.

  • In Alberta, the provincial health plan does not cover the cost of travel vaccinations. However, some private insurance plans may provide coverage for travel-related medical expenses, including vaccinations. It is advisable to check with your insurance provider to understand the extent of coverage for travel vaccinations.

  • In addition to vaccinations, we often provide a range of other services to help travelers stay healthy during their trips. These services may include pre-travel consultations, travel health education, advice on travel health kits, prescriptions for travel-related medications, and post-travel health assessments.
